Vintners and vasodilators: are French red wines more cardioprotective?

چکیده

Alcoholic beverages have been consumed by numerous societies for thousands of years, their use often intertwined with religion and culture. Alcohol has both beneficial and detrimental effects on health. A beneficial effect of alcohol was first reported in 1786 by Heberden, who noted relief of angina pectoris by “spirituous cordials” (1). Using observational data, an inverse relationship between alcohol consumption and cardiovascular disease risk was initially published by Cabot in 1904 (2). Since that time, almost 100 geographic, case-control, cohort, and epidemiological studies have reported similar findings (3,4). Concurrent observations have been found in comparisons of arteriographic and postmortem coronary atherosclerosis with reported alcohol consumption. The reduction in cardiovascular risk is generally confined to middle-aged and older individuals. Somewhat less cardioprotection from alcohol is evident in

Lowering the alcohol content of red wine does not alter its cardioprotective properties.

BACKGROUND Many epidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies suggest that chronic and moderate consumption of red wine benefits cardiovascular health, because of the alcoholic content or the polyphenols/flavonoids. AIMS The antioxidant and cardioprotective properties of a French red wine (cabernet sauvignon, 12% alcohol by volume) were compared with those of the same wine subjected to rev...

Antioxidant and vasodilatory effects of blackberry and grape wines.

In contrast to the well-described various biological effects of grape wines, the potential effects of commonly consumed blackberry wine have not been studied. We examined in vitro antioxidant and vasodilatory effects of four blackberry wines and compared them with the effects of two red and two white grape wines. Although some blackberry wines had lower total phenolic content relative to the re...

Red wine increases the expression of human endothelial nitric oxide synthase: a mechanism that may contribute to its beneficial cardiovascular effects.

OBJECTIVES The study tested the effect of red wine on endothelial-type nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression and eNOS activity in human endothelial cells. BACKGROUND Endothelial-type nitric oxide (NO) synthase exerts vasoprotective effects. Moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with a reduction of cardiovascular disease, and red wine seems to offer more benefits than any other ty...

An empirical analysis of the interrelations among the export of red wine from France, Italy and Spain

This paper deals with an empirical analysis of international trade data from EUROSTAT where the export of red wine from France, Italy and Spain to Belgium, Denmark, Japan, The Netherlands, UK and USA is investigated. Using monthly data from 1993:1 to 1998:12, trade flows, measured in quantities of red wine, from France, Italy and Spain to the before-mentioned countries are compared. The wine tr...

Potential health effects of Champagne wine consumption

Epidemiological studies have suggested an inverse correlation between red wine consumption and the incidence of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders. Although white wines are generally low in polyphenol content as compared to red wines, Champagne wines have been shown to contain relatively high amounts of phenolic acids that may exert protective cellular actions in vivo. In this study...
